Why another password?!

[edit] Background

Unfortunately, STC doesn't yet have a robust, single sign-on mechanism that integrates a member's login for the Society's website and STC community sites, such as the forum. The forum therefore uses the login facility provided by the forum software, PunBB.

When you first register with the forum, you are asked to provide your STC member number and the password you use at STC.org, so that the forum may do a one-time membership verification. Thereafter, your forum and STC.org logins are unrelated.

[edit] Ease of Use

While it's not ideal to maintain separate logins, we are pleased to report that your forum login is so easy to reset or recover that you're under no obligation to remember it at all, if you don't want to.

If you forget your forum login:

  • Go to the password recovery page.
  • Enter your email address and Submit.
  • Within minutes you'll receive a message containing your username, a new, random password, and a special link to reset your old (forgotten) password to the new one.
  • Follow the special reset link.
  • To login, enter your username and the new password.
  • Once logged-in, you may go to your profile page and change your password, though you're not obligated to.

You must follow the special reset link for the new password to be activated. This prevents others from resetting your password without your knowledge.

[edit] How often may I reset my forum password?

If you choose to, you may reset your password on every visit. The process takes only minutes and requires no human intervention.

As long as you have access to your email account you can always access your forum account. In effect, you don't have to remember your forum password at all.

[edit] I requested a new password, but never received the email. What now?

This is nearly always caused by something on your end blocking the message before it gets to you, often a spam filter. The reset message is sent immediately. If you don't receive it within five minutes -- and don't usually experience delivery delays -- the message has been blocked.

First, check any spam filter or "Junk" folder in your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Google Mail, etc.). The message may be there.

If your email provider (an employer or ISP) imposes filters before delivering to you, enquire into their process and how you can be notified of filtering activity.

Most email software provides a way to whitelist (meaning "always approve") email messages from certain senders, usually by adding those senders to your address book. The forum software sends password reset messages from the address forum@stcforum.org, so you might want to whitelist this address.

[edit] I can't access my old email address any more. Am I stuck?

No, but you'll need a manual password reset. See Resetting your password if your email address has changed.
