[edit] Fields needed on the template page

This presumes the template would be a form, and we would complete it with "Yes" hyperlinked when possible to the page with the information for each item that applies to a chapter or SIG, except where "URL" or other data is noted. It seems we could then produce a list of all chapters and SIGs with scholarships, for example, by searching for Scholarships: Yes.

  • Name of Chapter or SIG: Name
  • Location (for chapters): City, State or Province, Country
  • Date page last updated: Month, day, and year

Is this the date the chapter's webpage was last updated? Or the date that the info page on this wiki was last updated (which should be maintained automatically)?

  • Contact information: URL
  • Web site: Yes or blank
  • Newsletter: Yes or blank
  • Announcement list: Yes or blank
  • Forum: Yes or blank
  • Syndication feed(s): Yes or blank
  • Local SIGs (for chapters): Yes or blank
  • Local interest groups (for chapters): Yes or blank
  • Scholarships: Yes or blank
  • Community service: Yes or blank
  • Awards: Yes or blank
  • Competitions: Yes or blank

How about adding a Job bank/employment item, too? Also, instead of simply "yes" should it be the actual URL? This way when folks print the page, they'll have meaningful information?

[edit] Community Data Template

[Anon.] : Can an admin create a template for use with all Chapter/SIG pages. I'd like to see the template include:

  • Chapter/SIG logo
  • link to website
  • primary email contact

Destry 23:06, 25 July 2007 (UTC) : Creating the template is easy, if your using the term "template" as it's meant to be used in MediaWiki lingo, but I'll leave it to you to create the content yourself. When you have the content, I'll stick it in a template. Just link something off your user page in the meantime for draft. By the way, a wiki template functions like a PHP include. You draft it once and insert it multiple places via an output tag. You can't edit the content without editing the source template, which propagates to all instances of use elsewhere. Is that the template your talking about?

user:Ricks : I'm talking about creating a standard look/feel for all Community Data pages (like this. I'm not overly familiar with Mediawiki's syntax (and the Help Page Here] is empty :( ), but on Wikipedia when you create a new article for category "Foo" you can select a pre-defined template, so that the new page looks like all the other pages in the "Foo" category.

Destry 22:12, 27 July 2007 (UTC) : The only template functionality I know off hand is the one I mentioned above, but that's not saying the functionality doesn't exist or that it's not available via an extension for something. I'll look into the wikipedia reference and see what I can find.

[Anon.] : Also can an admin activate the RSS feed so that each chapter's/sig's rss feed cold be syndicated on its data page?

Destry 23:06, 25 July 2007 (UTC) : The New Global Agenda of the custom wiki redesign is the only thing on the admin's plate right now. I would suggest we start a Wiki Features Request where things can be listed, scrutinized, and prioritized by the community of users, and then acted upon when volunteer admins have time and/or help.

[edit] Future of the Community Data?

--Ricks 00:27, 25 July 2007 (UTC): What is the long-term plan for this Community Data page? I would like to see:

  1. Break the main data page up. It is too difficult to maintain as a table. I propose taking all the stuff OUT of the table and making a primary page that simply lists all the chapters. Or better yet, provide an image map, or a search box, etc. Then give each chapter/SIG its own wiki page for its community data. In the same way that the Forums provides an area for each chapter, the wiki could/should provide a page for each chapter.
    • Destry 03:32, 25 July 2007 (UTC) : I don't think anyone is tied to the table, it just started that way. I think a wiki branch for each STC entity is a good idea, and should help provide more context for main level navigation. Let's add a new wiki branch, "STC Organization," and people can go from there.
  2. Tighter integration between this data page and the Chapter Search and List of SIGs on stc.org. Ideally, searching for a chapter or SIG on stc.org should take you to the chapter's wiki page.
    • Destry 03:32, 25 July 2007 (UTC) : As mentioned in the forum, we don't have any say/control over what is done at the main STC site, but we can certainly link from wiki to anywhere at stc.org we want to.

[edit] Location column

What is the reasoning behind the Location column, containing latitudes and longitudes? Given that many communities cover a geographic location that cannot be pinpointed by a single latitude/longitude, does it serve much purpose here in this article? -- Kitty 02:49, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

The geodata isn't meant to be authoritative (and SIGs can't have it at all). Nevertheless, even approximations can be useful from 10,000 feet, for some kinds of analysis. --Lou 21:16, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

For what kinds of analysis? With the addition of the Feeds column, we have less room for everything and the Location column seems to take up a fair chunk of real estate (that could be better used) when it has data. - KittyMacAlpine 18:46, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Link weirdness

-- Kitty 02:49, 4 December 2006 (UTC): Links that split to the next line are experiencing problems with the little link graphic not rendering properly.

--Lou 21:20, 2 March 2007 (UTC) : I'm not seeing that. I saw and fixed a broken one (for Alamo; trailing slash after a filename), but there's no logical reason for wrapping to affect link targets.

KittyMacAlpine 18:46, 3 March 2007 (UTC): You're using Firefox, IIRC -- it's an IE issue with the wiki software.

[edit] Syndicating other chapters' content

How can I syndicate other chapters's RSS feeds here? For example, it would be nice to have, in addition to a simple link to each chapter's newsletter, the actual RSS feed, too. --Ricks 12:20, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Added a column "Feeds" and example links for Alaska Chapter. Ideally, an OPML file of all feeds (or classes of feeds) could be made available. --Lou 21:42, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Lou, that's a good start. But what I really want is a single page that would actually display the feeds (or first few items) from each chatper. That would allow members to instantly see what's going on with other chapters and subscribe to specific feeds. I think this would be especially useful to see the feeds from each SIG. --Ricks 02:59, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
