Help:Creating New User Accounts

This help is for admins who need to create a new user account on request.

- Log in to the wiki as yourself, if you are not already. (Tip: you can remain logged in between visits by clicking the "Remember me" checkbox in the log in screen.)
- After you are logged in, navigate to the Log in page (Special pages).
- Look for the link that reads "Create an account." Click this link. You'll be taken to the Create account page.
- Replace your information with the information of the new person, as follows:
- Replace your name in the "username" field with the username of the person as it exists in the STC Forum.
- Replace your password with a temporary password for them, and then retype in the second field as needed. (Tip: Make it easy on yourself and use the same temp password for each new account. No need to get creative every time.)
- Add the person's email address. (Tip: Make it clear to people ahead of time they have to give you the email address they want to use at the time they ask for a wiki account; otherwise you will have to get back to them a second time to ask for it.)
- Click the By Email button. The account info will be sent to the provided email for the new account. You should also indicate somewhere ahead of time for the user to change the password immediately upon first log in.
Encourage users to keep an email account in their profile in case they forget their password. The wiki can send it to them automatically if so. Otherwise, their accounts will have to be manually deleted by an admin, and you (the accounts handler) have to recreate it; that's a lot of really unnecessary work.
