File Upload Help

From StcWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Upload files to the StcWiki using the Upload file link in the left-hand "toolbox".

Each uploaded file is given its own Wiki page, which may be edited and discussed like any other. This is an example: Image:Test.doc.

In general, the file upload function is intended to let authors submit image files that are valuable on their own or will supplement Wiki text.

[edit] Allowed File Extensions

Currently (20051213), StcWiki will accept filenames with the following extensions:

.gif, .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .xls, .doc, .svg, .pdf

[edit] Non-Image File Types

The Wiki application doesn't check actual file types, only filename extensions. Any kind of file might be given one of the allowed extensions, uploaded, then successfully downloaded and used by anyone who knows what file type it really is.

The reason there's no particular enforcement is because it's expected that the Wiki itself will be used to create and present textual content, rather than serve as a file repository for other document types. So while it is possible to share and exchange, say, MS Word or PDF files via the Wiki's upload mechanism, using those document types to develop content defeats the purpose of the Wiki, and should only be done when there's a specific need.
