Creating effective topic titles
From StcWiki
Topic titles are important because they are the primary means by which users try to locate topics of interest within a given category or forum.
If a topic title is vague or not very indicative of the actual topic of the post, users may skip over the topic, thinking it has no relevance to what they are looking for (and that is bad if the message is indeed relevant).
What makes a good topic title? Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- You can use only 70 characters in your title, including spaces and punctuation, so create titles that are descriptive but concise (you will know when you have reached the limit, because you will not be able to add more characters to the subject line).
- Use words in the title that might be key words for the topic. If someone were searching for the information contained in the topic, what words would they intuitively use in that search?
- If you are posting a topic that is asking for information or help, phrase the title as a question (and use a question mark) so others can immediately see your intention from the title.
