"Advancing technical communication" - what does it mean?

STC's mission, put simply, is to advance technical communication. But what does it mean to advance technical communication, and how can we detect whether and to what extent we've done so?

Suggestion: broadly speaking, technical communication is advanced in two ways:

  1. The leading edge is moved ahead by someone discovering a better way to do things or gaining new knowledge, and then starting to spread it.
  2. The norm (of practice or knowledge) is shifted closer to the leading edge.
