Best designs of 2006

Business Week Online has published a list of the best product ideas of 2006, with a slide show of 108 of the these designated best ideas.

Highlights include Sun Microsystems User Centered Design Group’s Design Strategy for the the x4100 family of rack-mounted servers, and a small tent that opens in two seconds–someone throws it in the air and it lands ready to use. Tear down takes 15 seconds.

There are innovative products for people who are blind, and many other designs as well.

This starts a resource list on standards.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology of the United States maintains a site, http://standards.gov, that is a portal to infomation on the specifications referred to in US goverment regulations. Included are a searchable database and links to websites on standards maintained by government and other agencies.

Industry-specific standards are expanding

How standards are developed

Members express high interest in standards, and in December, 2005 STC’s Intercom magazine included an article by Whitney Quesenbery on getting involved in setting publications standards: “Why get involved in standards (and what you need to know about the standards process” (pages 36-39).

In June 2005, members identified a website that describes the methodology used by Standards Australia.
