Nonprofit organizations join 2007 Baldrige Winners

On November 20, the United States President and Department of Commerce announced the Baldrige Award winners for 2007.

This is the first year that nonprofit organizations have had a specific award category, and two nonprofit organizations won an award.

The 2007 Baldrige Award recipients (and their categories) are:

  • PRO-TEC Coating Co., Leipsic, OH (small business)
  • Mercy Health System, Janesville, WI (healthcare)
  • Sharp HealthCare, San Diego, CA (healthcare)
  • City of Coral Springs, Coral Springs, FL (nonprofit)
  • U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, NJ (nonprofit)

Informal learning in the workplace

ISO 9001 and 9004 standard updates due in 2009

The ISO 9001 and 9004 quality standards are scheduled to be released one month apart, in 2009. The ISO 9001 standard has is expected to be published in July 2009, with publication of the the updated ISO 9004 standard in August 2009.

Quality Conference for manufacturing

Quality Expo is a major quality conference for the manufacturing sector. It is one of four held during National Manufacturing Week (http://www.devicelink.com/expo/nmw07/index.html); the others are Assembly Technology Expo, Electronics Assembly Show, and PLASTEC Midwest. Quality Expo took place September 24-27 in Rosemont, IL and is scheduled again for September 23-25, 2008, in Rosemont, IL.

Next year’s STC conference will be held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania June 1-8, 2008. The Policies and Procedures Special Interest Group (P&P SIG) will propose a “Progression Session” to the 55th Annual Conference Program Committee.

P&P SIG is looking for presenters (and their topics) for this session. If you plan to attend the conference, and have an idea for a topic, we’d like you to develop your topic and present as part of our progression session.

Subject matter for Topics

Naturally, we will be looking for topics of relevance to members of our SIGs. But we will also be interested in related and relevant topics such as compliance, content management, career development management for those in our fields, documentation management, and the tools and technologies that we all use in our profession. Nonprofit Quality Forum

The American Society for Quality (ASQ) has partnered with ASAE and The Center for Association Leadership, and the Association Forum of Chicago to convene the first Nonprofit Quality Forum. Leaders from across the association community will take part in the event, Wednesday, September 19, in Chicago, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 “A key to organizational performance excellence in the nonprofit and association sector lies in an systematic approach to enterprise management,” said Paul Borawski, executive director and chief strategic officer of ASQ. “This meeting provides the chance for nonprofits and associations to look at the Baldrige model of excellence and the phenomenal results other organizations are getting by using enterprise management and then explore ways to start their own journey to excellence.” (more…)

Please welcome the 127 members who have joined since the last membership report. On June 30, the QPI SIG had 815 members, with 14,139 members in STC. On July 31, the SIG had 831 members, with 14,333 in STC.

Please welcome our 56 new members who joined in March. We hope that our non-renewing members will stay with STC, and wish our members well who departed to select other SIGs during the renewal period.

As of March 31, 2007 the QPI SIG has 714 members and STC has 12,768 members.

Congratulations to Thomas Neuburger, a long-time member of the Quality SIG, who received the Distinguished SIG Service Award from the STC Board this year for his contributions in getting STC started using the Lyris email lists some years ago. Thank you, Tom, for all your help and support.

Membership report February 2007

As of February 28, 2007 the Quality and Process Imrpovement SIG had 1040 members and STC had 16,802 members.

During the renewal cycle, 60 QPI SIG members made other selections in Feburary, as did 84 in January, and 54 in December. We wish our departing members well.

We welcome the 59 QPI SIG members who joined in December, the 89 members who joined in January, and our 67 new members who joined in Feburary.

Long time QPI SIG member and past STC President Andrea Ames was elected a Fellow of STC at the February Board meeting. Congratulations Andrea!

We await new membership information which will be available when renewals have been processed. If you have joined recently and want to be in touch, please write to any of the SIG leaders. Contact information is on the leadership page.
