STC Region 5 Conference registration is now open

The Region 5 Conference, sponsored by the STC Lone Star Community this year, is coming to Addison, Texas on November 2–4. In honor of the Lone Star Community’s 50th anniversary, the conference theme is the “50 Facets of Technical Communication.”

Sessions are organized into three broad stems: Usable Tools; Standards of Practice; Learning and Leading. There are almost 30 sessions, including four half-day workshops on Saturday afternoon. The conference has an exciting program, including the keynote speakers.

John Pruitt’s “Keeping People in Mind: The Creation and Use of Personas,” will be the opening keynote speech. A champion of using personas in Technical Communication, Pruitt is the User Research Manager for the Mobile & Tailored PC Division at Microsoft.

Paula LaRocque will deliver the closing keynote speech, “The Secrets of Good Workplace Writing.” LaRocque is the former assistant managing editor and writing coach for The Dallas Morning News and can be heard frequently on National Public Radio.

One of the half-day workshops, “Public Relations: Getting to the Media and Writing the Release “will be given by local FOX news reporter Jeff Crilley and The Lone Star Community’s own Elisa Miller. The cost for the half-day workshops is $75, and requires a separate registration from the conference.
