International Council for Technical Communication (INTECOM)
INTECOM is a federation of professional technical communication organizations around the world. The main activity is promotion of an international forum for the exchange of ideas and techniques in technical communication.
The INTECOM web site, www.intecom.org, provides links to the web sites of the member organizations. INTECOM also directly sponsors the Forum and the TC-Forum (Technical Communicator’s Forum). Visit the INTECOM web site to subscribe to the quarterly TC-Forum newsletter and the TCF list server, a medium for discussing international issues with more than 400 technical communicators around the world.
Periodically, one of the member organizations of INTECOM hosts a “Forum.” This conference includes presentations, brainstorming sessions, commercial displays, and extra-curricular activities such as tours. Traditionally, the Forum has been held every five years.
Unlike traditional conferences, many Forum activities encourage interactive participation of attendees. There are no “speakers” at Forum conferences, only “activators.” Attendees can participate in activities such as:
- An idea market. An intellectual marketplace, where several activators simultaneously present their ideas and questions. Flip charts are provided for display and note taking. Participants move freely among the flip charts, discussing material with the chart-keepers, or with fellow participants.
- Sort-and-build groups. These are discussions requiring extra time for in-depth treatment. Extra time and rooms are set aside for groups to continue their discussions or resume them later.
