Call for SIG volunteers at the 2008 Summit in Philadelphia

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Calling all ID/A SIG members to participate at the 2008 STC Summit in Philadelphia.

I hope to see many members of the ID/A SIG at the upcoming conference. Don’t forget to stop by the table at the opening reception and pick up your SIG button and Pen (handy writing tool to use during the rest of the conference). Speaking of the opening reception, why not volunteer and meet your fellow SIG members while helping to distribute the above mentioned tchokies! Half-hour time slots will be available from set-up at 6:45-7:15, 7:15-7:45, 7:45-8:15. Please email David Caruso with your availability.

Also at the conference, the SIG will be represented at the Networking lunches all 3 days of the conference. If you choose to sit at our SIGs table (and we hope that every member would) please let David know if you would like to be a moderator/discussion starter. This calls for an extrovert who can mingle and get the networking going. Nothing cast in stone, but it is always easier if there is someone identified to start the conversation. That person could be you!

OK, that’s it for my pitch to recruit volunteers. I really hope everyone who is going to the conference also takes the opportunity to explore Philadelphia. It really is the city where this country started and some of the most important documents ever written were conceived and when quill was put to parchment, a nation was born. There will be a social event as in years past but the details are as yet undetermined. Look to this page for details as they emerge.

ID/A Progression at 2008 STC Summit

Friday, September 28th, 2007

The Information Design and Architecture SIG would like to announce a call for those interested in participating in a progression at the 2008 STC Summit in Philadelphia. Last year in Minneapolis we had great attendance for a group of fantastic speakers on a wide array of topics related to the ID/A community. I would encourage everyone to review the official Call for Proposals posted on the STC site. If you think you have a topic or would like to present a case study from your experience, please contact David Caruso directly with all your information no later than October 5, 2007 (next Friday – sorry for the minimal notice).

STC Annual Conference 2008

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

The STC homepage has been updated to include a save the date announcement http://www.stc.org/55thConf/index.asp for June 1 to 4, 2008. Check back as the call for proposals is anticipated to be posted soon. As in previous years, I hope to coordinate a progression from the ID/A community. Anyone with suggestions as to a possible theme or ideas for contributions is welcome to leave them in the comments of this post. I can tell you that even though our timeslot was not the greatest, our progression in Minneapolis was well attended and well received.

SIG member talks about being an IA

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Recently Rebecca Deery, a new member of the ID-IA SIG, posted an introduction on the SIG’s email list (as all new members are invited to do). Rebecca’s work and experience are somewhat unusual, and she agreed to answer follow up questions for Design Matters.[Design Matters] You work for GSI Commerce, Inc. in King of Prussia, PA, an e-commerce outsource solution company building retail web sites. You’re an information architect. What kinds of information do you structure for your clients?

[Rebecca] The exciting thing about e-commerce is that IAs are always designing something new, from unique shopping tools to an entire website. Information structure, flow and experience are key.

[Design Matters] How do your clients handle the information before your work on their retail web site? Or, put another way, how do your clients present the information and the challenge of structuring it to you?

[Rebecca] Typically via a whole client discovery process and some pretty detailed functional requirements.

[Design Matters] What is your background? How did you move from copywriting to IA?

[Rebecca] Every IA’s got a different story to tell! I started with an IS degree then moved into writing, and then came full circle with IA. Writers can make good IAs because if you know the system well enough to write about it, it’s a good foundation on which you can design it too!

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

On the way to Minneapolis!

Greetings Information Designers and Architects, can you feel the excitement building? I can! I can’t wait for the opportunity to hear from my peers and friends…participate in interesting sessions…hear what STC has been up to this past year and where it will be going in the future…attend networking events and meet fellow SIG members and others from around the world. I hope you are all as excited as I am (if so, submit a comment!) and let me take this opportunity to invite all you out there in the blogosphere to participate in the conference online.

Visit this blog throughout the Summit (May 13-16) read about what the SIG is doing and where we are going. Hopefully there will be photos as well so you can see some of us in action. Look for a post inviting daily comments from SIG members.

Seeking a sponsor

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

In an effort to conserve the funds of the organization, the ID/A SIG is looking for a company or individual willing to sponsor the purchase of a vinyl banner to be used at SIG events, starting with the 2007 STC Conference in Minneapolis.

I anticipate the cost of the banner to be around $150.00 from Kinko’s (indication of sponsorship could be arranged). If you or your employer are interested in this opportunity or have the ability to produce vinyl banners in-house and want to off-set our costs, please contact David L. Caruso dcaruso@cdc.gov or call 412-386-6473 no later than April 12, 2007.
