issues that are unique to Canada

One of this SIGs goals is to educate members of STC internationally about issues that are unique to Canada. I’m kind of weak in this area; I know that our tax situation is different here than in the U.S., but I suppose any part of the Society outside of the U.S. could say the same thing.

What are issues do you think are unique to STC members — and technical communicators — in Canada? And of these, which do you think are important to educate the rest of STC about, and why?

I’m not sure if our issues are necessarily unique to Canada, or if there is a need to educate the rest of the STC about our issues. But here are a few concerns that were recently discussed on the list:

    * The STC has negotiated insurance discounts in the U.S. What about Canada?

    * The STC makes a point of the dues being tax-deductable in the U.S. What about Canada?

    * There are no Canadian chapters east of Montreal. This could also be an issue in other parts of the country.

    What are your concerns?

Well, if there are no issues unique to Canada about which we need to educate members of STC internationally, then let’s strike this from the SIG goals.

As for *my* concerns, it’s actually more of an interest in hearing stories from Canadian technical communicators, becoming more aware of what’s happening TC-wise in this country, and discovering whether in fact there is a “Canadian” flavour to the work we do (beyond spelling and grammar, that is).

RE: insurance discounts — A previous president of the Eastern Ontario chapter negotiated a special group insurance plan with Baird Financial Group. All Canadian STC members are elgible to take part in the plan. You can see some information about it at http://www.grbairdfinancial.com/beneflex.htm (we are the “local chapter of a national association” they mention on that page) and you can sign for a free quote at http://www.grbairdfinancial.com/login1.asp.
